If somebody had asked me to guess Madonna’s temperament, I would have chosen choleric. But my little table reveals something different, so let’s look at the chart and the table and see what we can surmise.

Contrary to my expectation, Madonna comes out as a melancholic: cold & dry, with a little bit of heat from the sanguine and choleric, but very little wet. The key here is Virgo rising, a very appropriate ascendant for a woman who became visible for the song “Like A Virgin”. Virgo is the sign of the Virgin, of course, and its fabled chastity is a concept that the Material Girl (material – earth – melancholic) has played with very effectively. Virgo – and keep in mind both the Moon and Mercury are placed here – symbolizes an enormous attention to detail, which is apparent in her recordings. To my eye, and I would be the first to admit that I am not a culture vulture in any sense of the phrase, Madonna’s sexuality and even her playfulness about sexuality has always seemed more like an idea, like a concept, than like anything terribly personal. Sex, in its essence, is wet if for no reason than that it is connective – it’s an exchange of fluids. As we don’t really know the woman, it’s impossible to be certain, but I do think it reveals certain qualities about her that may not have been easily perceived otherwise.
